Friday (Oct. 10)
--->La Cueva 54, Los Lunas 35
Senior safety Jhett Kinghorn was probably not the most likely candidate to be La Cueva’s most important football player in its most important game of the season.
But indeed, Kinghorn, with the District 2-6A championship essentially on the line, was a defensive and special teams menace for the fifth-ranked Bears, who all but secured the 2-6A title with a 54-35 road win over the eighth-ranked Tigers on Friday night.
La Cueva scored in all three phases.
“When you can score on special teams and defense, you’ve got things going your way,” La Cueva coach Brandon Back said.
---> St. Pius 45, Portales 7
The plan for St. Pius on Friday after coming off its first loss of the season last week to Albuquerque Academy was to show that the fluke was not the first half of its season, but rather the outcome against the Chargers.
Mission accomplished. All it really took was a punishing, game-opening drive, which set the stage for a dominating 45-7 win over Portales at Milne Stadium.
“We had to hit the reset button,” Sartans coach Curtis Flakes II said. ”We talked to them about being resilient all week and remaining calm in the storm.”
St. Pius (4-1, 2-1 District 2-4) opened its ground game to start, throwing just once in an 11-play, 63-yard drive that chewed up almost five minutes and was capped by Ezra Ocampo’s 4-yard run.
---> Cleveland 27, Cibola 6
In Rio Rancho, It wasn’t your usual offensive clinic at Lightning Bolt Stadium, but it was a District 1-6A win nonetheless for Class 6A’s second-ranked Storm, which avoided the upset scare in what was a one possession game up until the fourth quarter.
QB Jordan Hatch and the offense were slow to start, posting just 14 points in the first half along with two red zone turnovers.
A 14-6 halftime score had the home crowd worried, but stability on the ground from running back Samuel Bustillos and a passing resurgence via receiver Jacob Maldonado brought the Storm back to life.
---> Eldorado 53, Sandia 50
At Wilson Stadium, the Eagles nearly squandered a huge lead to the Matadors in the fourth quarter, and Sandia in fact had a throw into the end zone on the game’s final play, but Jahari Morehead intercepted for Eldorado (3-4, 2-2) in a crucial District 2-6A victory.
Morehead also returned a kickoff for a touchdown for Eldorado, which is tied with Albuquerque High and Sandia at 2-2 in league play.
---> Volcano Vista 29, Farmington 7
At Hutchison Stadium in Farmington, junior tailback D’Angelo Mitchell was over 100 yards with three touchdowns as the fourth-ranked (6-1, 2-0) earned a District 1-6A win over the Scorpions (1-6, 0-2).
---> Albuquerque High 34, West Mesa 27
At Nusenda Community Stadium, Alberto Landeros rushed for 286 yards and three touchdowns as the Bulldogs (4-3, 2-2 in 2-6A) downed the Mustangs (2-5, 1-3).
Gabriel Fernandez added two field goals for AHS, including a 52-yarder. Nijion Bokor registered a quarterback sack on the final drive for the Bulldogs to help secure the victory.
---> Hobbs 44, Centennial 33
In Hobbs, the seventh-ranked Eagles (5-2, 2-1 in 3-6A) scored their biggest win of the season, turning away the third-ranked Hawks (5-2, 2-1) who saw their five-game winning streak come to an end.
Junior Medrano threw four touchdowns – two to Braddock Beaty – and ran for a 64-yard score to lead the way for Hobbs. Shamus Wright added an 87-yard scoring run for the Eagles.
---> Silver 21, Chaparral 13
Silver, which was 0-3 in District 2-4A and in last place in the league, upset No. 2-ranked and visiting Chaparral (6-2, 3-1) 21-13.

Saturday (Oct. 11)
---> Albuquerque Academy 43, Manzano 15
Academy helped restore some calm on Saturday, avoiding further dramatics as the sixth-ranked Chargers overcame an early deficit to beat No. 7 Manzano 43-15 at Wilson Stadium.
“They’re starting to believe,” Academy coach David Lee said. “They understand their worth and their abilities and you can see it on the field now.”
Academy (4-3, 2-1) is tied for second place in district with St. Pius, one-half game behind Chaparral, which still occupies first place despite the Lobos’ unexpected loss on Friday night in Silver City.

---> Santa Fe 27, Atrisco Heritage 22
At Nusenda Community Stadium, Jasper Nelson had a pair of early touchdown runs and finished with three overall, and the Demons (4-3, 2-2 in 2-6A) eventually had to hold off the Jaguars (1-6, 0-4) with a late stop in the red zone.
Santa Fe is one of four 2-2 teams in its district, along with Eldorado, Albuquerque High and West Mesa. That quartet is tied for third place.
---> Hope Christian 21, Pojoaque 20
At Milne Stadium, the Elks (3-3, 1-1 in 2-3A), trailing by a point midway through the fourth quarter following a touchdown, went for two and the lead, but an incomplete pass turned out to the difference in a loss to the Huskies (6-2, 1-1).
Quarterback RJ Montoya scored all three touchdowns for Hope Christian. His last score was a 2-yarder early in the fourth quarter for a 21-14 lead. The teams had been tied 7-7 and 14-14.
Landon Cochran had three sacks for the Husky defense.
