James Meeks Bisbee 10/10/1937 - 5/10/2025 Born in Bristow, Oklahoma to Wallace A. Bisbee and Katherine Meeks on October 10, 1937. His grandfather Dr. Walter Bisbee, attended. The family moved to Albuquerque in 1948, where Jim attended Bandelier Elementary, Jefferson Junior High, and Highland High. At Highland, Jim was on the football, track teams, and he attended NM Boys State. Jim attended the University of New Mexico. While at UNM, Jim was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. Jim was a member of the Naval ROTC battalion, serving as its commander during his senior year. Jim graduated from the University of New Mexico in 1959 with a B.A. in Geology. Jim chose the United States Marine Corps option out of ROTC and was at Officer Candidate School in Quantico, Virginia, when he met college student, Cynthia Varney of Rochester, New Hampshire. After their marriage, Jim was assigned to the Pioneer Battalion of the 1st Marine Division at Camp Pendleton, California. Jim and Cindy rented an apartment near the beach in San Clemente, from Captain John Glenn, then a USMC pilot. Son Michael arrived on March 18, 1961. After leaving active duty with the USMC, Jim, Cindy, and Mike made their way to Rochester, New Hampshire. Where Jim joined his father-in-law, Charles Varney, Jr., in the insurance business. Jim was in the USMC reserves in an engineering company based in Portland, ME. Jim was serving as commanding officer when he retired from the USMC in 1972. Jim was active in the community, first in the Jaycees then Rotary. He served on the local national bank board of directors, the local Girl Scout council board, and the Strafford County Development Center board. Daughter Susan arrived on January 29, 1968. While in New Hampshire Jim fell in love with the University of New Hampshire ice hockey team and was a founding member of the Friends of UNH Hockey booster club. Jim, Cindy, Mike, and Susan travelled throughout New England supporting the Wildcats. Over the years, Jim and Cindy supported UNH at 'Frozen Fours' in Detroit, Providence, and Anaheim. Jim and Cindy moved to Albuquerque in 1991. Jim continued to work as an independent insurance agent while staying active in Rotary. After retiring, Jim and Cindy became active travelers. They crisscrossed the country, coast to coast, Canada to Mexico. Visiting all 48 contiguous states and their capitals, all the National Parks, all the US presidential libraries, and the myriad of stops in between. From the tallest hockey stick in Eveleth, Minnesota to the biggest ball of twine in Cawker City, Kansas. In 2007, Jim was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease. He was able to treat his symptoms with medication and continued to lead an active life. Jim never developed the exaggerated tremors and maintained fine muscle control until his stroke in 2024. In 2010, Jim and Cindy moved to Connecticut to support their daughter Susan who had cancer. While in Connecticut, Jim became a college basketball fan as both the UConn men's team and the UConn women's team were successful and playing hard nosed ball. Jim and Cindy's daughter Susan passed in September of 2013. In 2014, Jim and Cindy returned to Albuquerque. Jim's Parkinson's was beginning to affect his mobility. Jim and Cindy enjoyed a quiet life. On March 21, 2024 Jim suffered a stroke. He spent 6 weeks in the UNM Neuro ICU and Neuro ward. Then, in June 2024 he went to the Canyon skilled nursing facility. Where he stayed until passing on Saturday, May 10, 2025. Jim is survived by his wife Cynthia, his son Michael, his grandchildren James, Eamon, and Annika, his brother Wallace, his sister Kay, his cousin Carolyn, and numerous nephews, nieces, and other cousins. There is no funeral. A memorial celebration of life is planned for August 2025.
