5 things to know before the Balloon Fiesta
Rainbow Ryders chief pilot Troy Bradley walks through the balloon in preparation for flight at Balloon Fiesta Park in Albuquerque on Oct. 3.
As temperatures drop and the chill of the fall breeze sweeps across the state, people are gearing up for the Balloon Fiesta, the largest event in New Mexico. For first time visitors, here are five things you should know before you visit the Balloon Fiesta.
1) Dress warm
Balloon Fiesta begins early in the morning and since the event is in October, mornings will be cold and windy. Dressing in layers will help keep the chill away and as the sun rises higher into the sky, you can peel off each layer. It's best to bring a beanie, a sweatshirt, a long sleeve shirt, warm pants and a pair of gloves. It's also recommended to bring a good pair of walking shoes.
2) Get there early
Balloon Fiesta crowds can reach an excess of 80,000 people per day. It takes time to park and get into the field, especially with traffic, so the earlier you go, the better. Gates open at 4:30 a.m. for morning events and 3:00 p.m. for evening events.
3) Bring a blanket or lawn chairs
Limited seating is available at the Balloon Fiesta. Lawn chairs and blankets are permitted at the field and can help provide a comfortable place to sit.
4) Prepare for coolers and other items to be searched
Coolers are permitted at the Balloon Fiesta. Feel free to pack snacks, coffee, or a water bottle to enjoy the Balloon Fiesta. All bags and coolers are subject to being searched. Glasses and alcohol are not allowed.
5) Rideshare or park and ride
With nearly one million people visiting Albuquerque to watch the Balloon Fiesta, traffic will be busy. If you don't want to wait in traffic, there are various park and ride locations across the city. For those who do drive, leave early or be prepared to wait in traffic. Parking is $20.
