A Holy Week custom continued as thousands of Catholic pilgrims trekked to the Santuario de Chimayó in northern New Mexico and Tomé Hill in Valencia County on Good Friday. Some of those on the path carried large crosses and walked barefoot along highways and down gravel roads as they made their way to the sacred sites. The tradition has carried on for decades and, more recently, sees some highways and roads along the route blocked to traffic to keep pilgrims safe on the journey.
