Correction

Dear Albuquerque Journal Readers,

Monday, we ran a story on the front page that was wrong. We incorrectly reported that BioPark fees in the mayor’s latest budget would rise by $5, when they are only rising by $1. Other information was incorrect as well. The reporter, who has been on the beat only a matter of weeks, accidentally looked at the fiscal year 2025 budget, rather than FY26. We apologize to the mayor’s office for this mistake and to our readers for the misinformation.

This week marks my six-month anniversary on the job and I feel that I am only beginning to win back your trust in New Mexico’s leading news source. Which is why I felt it important to write personally to apologize for this error and to pledge that we can, and will, do better. Journalists are humans and we all make mistakes, but we also have been endeavoring to do more fact checking on our stories. This one slipped through a crack in our fact-checking.

I hope you’ll read the corrected story on the mayor’s budget on page A3. And, as always, feel free to reach out to me with any feedback, questions, comments or concerns.

Sincerely,

Jay Newton-Small
