SANTA FE — New Mexico’s tourism secretary, Jen Paul Schroer, is moving over to lead the state’s Aging and Long-Term Services Department in a reshuffling of the governor’s Cabinet.

Schroer is an original member of Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham’s administration, which began in 2019.

She has headed the Tourism Department but also handled other assignments. Schroer directed communications early in the COVID-19 pandemic and helped oversee the state’s vaccine rollout, which included a registration system intended to provide equitable distribution of the shots.

Her departure creates a vacancy atop the Tourism Department, where Lancing Adams, the development director, will serve as acting secretary.

In a written statement, Lujan Grisham described Schroer as an “emerging health care leader” who knows how to get things done.

“Secretary Schroer has been a valuable member of my cabinet,” the Democratic governor said. “She has a long history of service to New Mexico that will inform her decisions leading a new department.”

Schroer will be taking over the department that includes adult protective services and other programs for seniors.

Before joining the Lujan Grisham administration, she served as executive director of the Chamber of Commerce in Davis, California, just west of Sacramento. She also worked as president of the New Mexico Hospitality Association.

Schroer had an annual salary of $196,000 in July, according to state records.
