Foundation for Building program Build Green New Mexico works toward a sustainable future
How the Foundation for Building’s Build Green New Mexico program is driving sustainable development
The Foundation for Building has long been at the forefront of initiatives that prioritize sustainable development, and its Build Green New Mexico program (BGNM) is a shining example of this commitment. As we move further into the 21st century, the importance of environmentally responsible construction practices has never been more apparent. BGNM is leading the charge toward a more sustainable and energy-efficient future for New Mexico.
What is Build Green New Mexico?
Build Green New Mexico is a program created under the Foundation’s corporate mission in 2006. It was the only program the FFB had for a number of years until launching Tree Green New Mexico four years ago. The program is designed to promote and facilitate green building practices in New Mexico. As a voluntary certification initiative, it provides builders and developers with a framework to create high-performance, energy-efficient and environmentally conscious buildings. By following BGNM’s guidelines, construction projects can significantly reduce their environmental footprint while enhancing the comfort, health and affordability of homes and commercial spaces.
The Goals and Standards of BGNM
The primary goal of Build Green New Mexico is to ensure that buildings meet rigorous standards for energy efficiency, water conservation and indoor air quality. This is achieved through:
- Energy Efficiency: Incorporating advanced technologies and materials that reduce energy consumption.
- Water Conservation: Implementing systems that minimize water waste and promote efficient usage.
- Sustainable Materials: Encouraging the use of renewable, recycled, and locally sourced materials.
- Indoor Air Quality: Ensuring that buildings provide healthy living and working environments by reducing pollutants and improving ventilation.
The program’s certification process is based on a point system, allowing builders to achieve different levels of recognition, such as Silver, Gold or Emerald, depending on their adherence to the guidelines.
Foundation for Building’s Role
The Foundation for Building plays a pivotal role in advancing BGNM’s mission. By leveraging its resources, expertise and network, the Foundation actively supports builders and developers in adopting green building practices. Some key contributions include:
- Education and Training: Hosting workshops, seminars and training sessions to educate industry professionals about the benefits and methodologies of sustainable construction.
- Advocacy: Promoting policies and incentives that encourage green building practices at local and state levels.
- Community Engagement: Raising awareness among New Mexico residents about the value of sustainable building and how it contributes to a healthier environment and lower utility costs.
- Technical Assistance: Offering guidance to builders during the certification process to ensure successful project completion.
The program’s impact on New Mexico
BGNM has had a profound impact on the state. Certified buildings in New Mexico have demonstrated substantial reductions in energy usage, leading to lower utility bills for residents and businesses. By minimizing waste and using sustainable materials, these projects help preserve natural resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The green building sector has created jobs and spurred innovation within the construction industry, boosting the local economy.
The Foundation for Building is committed to expanding their reach and impact in the coming years. As climate challenges intensify, the need for sustainable building practices will only grow. Through continued collaboration, advocacy and innovation, these organizations aim to make green building the standard, not the exception, across New Mexico. By prioritizing environmental stewardship, economic resilience, and community well-being, they are laying the foundation for a greener, healthier and more prosperous state.
