A Bass Pro Shops sign sits beside Cabela’s at 5151 Lang NE in Albuquerque on March 25. The sign reflects a unification that took place between Cabela’s and Bass Pro Shops in 2017.

New signage representing the Bass Pro Shops brand is now hanging front and center at Albuquerque’s only Cabela’s location.

The Cabela’s sign also remains, reflecting a co-branding that is the result of the two outdoor recreation retailers uniting when Bass Pro Shops acquired Cabela’s in 2017, the same year the store at 5151 Lang NE opened.

While the Journal Center store began reflecting the co-brand immediately, the recent arrival of a large “Bass Pro Shops” sign put a stamp on the transition. The two brands and each of their proprietary products still exist individually but operate under the same company, meaning the Albuquerque store reflects both products and brands.

A Bass Pro Shops spokesperson told the Journal in an email that the unification “significantly expanded our range of outdoor gear.”

“Hunting was Cabela’s baby. ... Bass Pro is better at fishing. They’re trying to mix the best of both worlds,” said Phillip Hirose, Albuquerque’s Bass Pro Shops general manager.

Employees of the store are wearing the Bass Pro Shops brand, and Google now refers to the location as “Bass Pro Shops (formerly Cabela’s).”

The store will continue to honor gift cards or product returns for both brands, Hirose said.

The Bass Pro Shops sign isn’t the only new sign to adorn the store. A sign for Tracker, a boat and ATV company, now also hangs on the building. The store doesn’t carry Tracker products yet, but is “hoping” to soon, Hirose said.
