The recently rebranded Sunward Federal Credit Union is expanding into Durango, Colorado, financial institution officials announced Wednesday.

The credit union based in Albuquerque will have 16 branches across New Mexico, California and Colorado once the location opens in May, according to a news release. The credit union didn’t offer other details on the expansion, like the number of hires and the specs of the Durango branch.

“We’re thrilled to become part of the vibrant Durango community,” Sunward Executive Vice President Alex de la Cruz said in a statement. “With our growth into southern Colorado, we have a new opportunity to share the exceptional experience Sunward members have come to know and love, marking an important milestone in our mission to become the economic engine for communities in the Southwest.”

The expansion into Colorado follows major victories for the credit union, which rebranded from Sandia Laboratory Federal Credit Union late last year. At the time, Steph Sherrodd, president and CEO of Sunward, told the Journal the change came as executives looked at “establishing a long-term vision and strategy for the organization.”

It also follows the acquisition of Utah-based Mountain America Credit Union’s Albuquerque branches. Sunward completed the deal in March, which boosted its total members to just over 167,000, a spokesperson said at the time.
