American Airlines is expanding its offering of seasonal flights to coincide with the 53rd Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta.

Albuquerque International Sunport officials this week said the airline will offer nonstop service to and from Charlotte Douglas International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport.

The Sunport will offer East Coast travelers six round-trip flights from Philadelphia and Charlotte, North Carolina, on Oct. 3, 4, 5, 10, 12 and 13. The Balloon Fiesta runs Oct. 4 through 12.

“We’re thrilled to see American Airlines increase its service for one of the world’s most iconic aviation events,” Sunport Aviation Director Richard McCurley said in a statement. “These added flights will help meet the tremendous demand we experience each October and make it easier for guests nationwide to join one of our state’s most celebrated traditions.”

Daniel Jiron, Sunport business development manager, said airlines have added extra cities and routes for the Balloon Fiesta over a number of years. More recently, however, he said air carriers have leaned into “event flying,” looking at activities worldwide to see where they can add more frequencies.

For the last few years, Jiron said the Sunport has created a Balloon Fiesta mobility study. The findings detail where attendees are traveling from, allowing the airport to make a case to prospective airlines for additional flights.

Airport officials announced similar options with Delta Air Lines in June, offering flights out of the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport to the Sunport. Trip dates include Oct. 3, 5, 10 and 12.

“We welcome any additional service, and maybe down the line, that can lead to some new year-round or seasonal destinations,” Jiron said. “It’s good to see that there are choices offered, and makes it easier for folks to come to such a world-class event.”

While he can’t say if it’ll increase Balloon Fiesta attendance numbers, Jiron said offering the nonstop flights could influence out-of-state travelers to attend. He sees the Sunport continuing the service for the foreseeable future.

“Being from New Mexico, having seen it so many times — it really is an incredible event,” Jiron said. “In my mind, it’s something you can’t describe by telling somebody or do it justice through photographs or videos.”
