Volunteers fan out each spring to work on the Albuquerque Rose Garden
Rebecca Murphy strains to cut a large branch of a rose bush behind the Tony Hillerman Library, in Albuquerque, on Saturday, March 7, 2026. She was one of over a dozen volunteers with the Albuquerque Rose Society pruning the thorny flowering plants in the Albuquerque Rose Garden around the public library. Members of the library spend six days in the spring, spread out over three weeks, pruning the plants each year. They also install new plants, fertilize existing ones, bark, compost and spend hours deadheading, removing dead blooms. The Albuquerque Rose Garden has nearly 1,100 roses in it and is 64 years old.Eddie Moore/Journal
