Bernalillo County animal shelter in South Valley reopened after black mold
Bernalillo County Animal Care Services and Resource Center reopened Tuesday after closing due to an employee reporting black mold throughout the building.
Testing earlier this month showed the areas affected by mold included the main hallway, surrounding rooms and various kennel areas.
Over the weekend, contractors began remediation work on two kennel that house roughly 35 dogs. The rooms were cleaned, disinfected and fogged for about a day, with air tests coming back clear. The mold was confirmed in the ceiling tile of the rooms, but not in the sheetrock. All contaminated materials have been removed.
Other areas containing mold, such as the main hallway, will take longer to to fix and will remain closed until remediation is complete.
Animal Care Services encourages people to adopt or foster during the remediation period. Those who are interested can submit an online application or go to the Bernalillo County website, www.bernco.gov/animal-care-services, for more information.
“We want to thank the community members who have already stepped up to foster 28 dogs during this unexpected situation. It’s not easy work, but your compassion has made all the difference,” Animal Care Director Misha Goodman said in a news release. “I also want to thank our incredible staff for their continued hard work towards providing continued services as best we can.”
