Our economy flourishes thanks to a diverse and inclusive workforce, inviting all New Mexico workers to participate in the celebration, irrespective of union affiliation. The state's workforce represents a rich tapestry of industries that propel its economy, encompassing vital sectors like construction, agriculture, energy, health care and tourism.

It's crucial to reflect on the state of our employees — celebrating workers' achievements while acknowledging the challenges we face. Our attention is drawn to two pressing issues: the ongoing labor shortage and the need for greater workplace inclusion.

The labor shortage remains a pressing concern for many industries nationwide, particularly in our state. As the demand for construction services grows, so does the need for a highly skilled workforce. The aging population means more workers are retiring than entering the workforce, creating an urgent need for action to bridge the gap.

Associated Builders and Contractors has taken proactive steps to address this challenge by investing in education, training and apprenticeship programs that prepare workers for the demands of the modern construction landscape. Central to ABC's mission is its unwavering commitment to training and workforce development, ensuring that the construction industry continues to thrive and that workers are equipped with the skills necessary to succeed in a rapidly evolving sector.

As we address the labor shortage, we must commit to inclusiveness in our workplaces. Inclusiveness is not just a moral imperative; it is a practical necessity. A diverse workforce brings a range of perspectives, ideas and solutions to the table, driving innovation and success.

ABC is dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion within the construction industry. The organization recognizes that a diverse workforce reflects the communities it serves and is also a key driver of innovation and success. ABC's inclusion initiatives aim to create opportunities for underrepresented groups, including women, minorities and veterans, to thrive in construction careers.

By fostering an inclusive environment, ABC ensures that all workers, regardless of their background, have access to the training and resources they need to succeed. Actions to ensure that all workers — regardless of race, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability or background — have equal opportunities to thrive and grow. This includes fair wages, safe working conditions and access to benefits like health care and paid leave.

Unfortunately, government policies like project labor agreements and community workforce agreements suppress these initiatives by arbitrarily imposing restrictions on workers working on projects dependent on labor affiliation, hindering the progress toward a more inclusive workforce.

PLAs greatly diminish the pool of qualified craftspeople available to work on projects. They also prevent businesses from growing their skilled workforce because they aren’t allowed to staff their company with their people.

In a time when we promote inclusion and diversity, PLAs are the opposite.

Businesses, policymakers and communities should honor the contributions of all workers, past and present, union and non-unionized workers. But let us also recommit to building a robust and inclusive workforce.

Employers, policymakers and communities must work together to address the labor shortage with innovative solutions and a renewed focus on inclusiveness.
