The Albuquerque Journal, the state’s largest newspaper, has welcomed two new business reporters, covering everything from health care and technology to retail and real estate.

Justin Garcia and Kylie Garcia round out the Journal’s business desk, alongside co-business editors Matthew Narvaiz and Megan Gleason.

A veteran journalist, Justin Garcia will cover technology, the national laboratories and health care across New Mexico. An Edgewood native, he most recently served as a reporter for the Las Cruces Bulletin and has previously worked for the Las Cruces Sun-News and the Scottsbluff Star-Herald in Nebraska. Justin Garcia attended the University of New Mexico and also served as the editor-in-chief of the student-run newspaper the Daily Lobo.

Also on the desk is Kylie Garcia — no relation to Justin — a Grants native who graduated from New Mexico State University in 2024. Kylie Garcia most recently worked as a reporter for The Santa Fe New Mexican as part of the fellowship program offered by the New Mexico Local News Fund, which places recent graduates in newsrooms across the state. She also previously reported for her hometown newspaper, the Cibola Citizen, for more than two years. Kylie Garcia will cover retail and real estate for the Journal, with a focus on the openings and closings in the Albuquerque metro area.

“We’re excited to add Kylie and Justin to the team, representing some of the best homegrown journalists New Mexico has to offer,” said Narvaiz.

Gleason added that the two new reporters will cover much-needed topic areas.

“The kind of local news Kylie and Justin deliver is more important now than ever as we feel the trickle-down effects of a rapidly moving federal administration,” Gleason said.
