The League of United Latin American Citizens and Tyson Foods donated 40,000 pounds of food to Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico last week.

The donation, about 160,000 servings of poultry products, will be distributed to 16 different counties in the state whose residents face food insecurity, a news release said. The donation is in honor of the 50th anniversary of LULAC’s National Education Service Centers, which offer educational programs and leadership services.

“We are grateful to receive such a precious food donation,” said Linda Wedeen, interim president and CEO of Roadrunner Food Bank of New Mexico. “Large donations of protein like this one are not what the food bank typically receives. For the people we serve, food items like this are often a treat. We are honored to be able to provide this food to New Mexicans experiencing hunger. It will reach tens of thousands of families across the state.”

LULAC, whose mission is to alleviate hunger among Latino populations, is the largest and oldest Latino civil rights organization in the country, according to the release.

Tyson Foods and LULAC have donated 1.7 million pounds of nutrition to food banks across the country since 2003.

“We’re proud to do our part to help great partners like the Roadrunner Food Bank, which works on the front line every day to end hunger,” said Paul Davis, Tyson Foods vice president and chief equity, inclusion and diversity officer.
