The New Mexico Film Office is hosting training opportunities for veterans interested in careers in the state’s film industry.

Operation Soundstage is a pilot program of NMFO intended to increase hiring and training of military veterans in the New Mexico film industry in “off-camera” jobs like carpenters, electricians, editors, technicians and production assistants.

“Veterans bring invaluable skills such as discipline, teamwork, and leadership that directly translate to success on set,” NMFO Director Steve Graham said in a statement.

The first session, held on Nov. 12, will walk veterans through the structure, departments and positions on a film set. Local producer Sam Tischler of Netflix’s “The End of the Road” will lead the session, along with Rochelle Bussey of the New Mexico Film Office.

The program’s second session, on Nov. 19, will explore the unions in the film industry, and will include representatives from local chapters of IATSE, the union representing film crew, the Screen Actors Guild–American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, and the Teamsters.

Film and television production is one of New Mexico’s largest industries, with a production spend of more than $5.75 billion statewide, according to NMFO.

Both events are free and will be held via Zoom. Registration is available at nmfilm.com.
