Pitching In! Blue Cross employees raise funds for school supplies
With back-to-school season in full swing, employees from the Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico have raised over $8,000 to purchase supplies for schools across New Mexico, the insurance agency announced Monday.
The supplies will go to five Title I elementary schools where at least 40% of the student population come from low-income families, according to the press release. Many of the benefiting schools are also in rural communities across the state.
The donation is a part of Operation Back to School initiative, a 33-year-old program that aims to fill the gap in student learning by providing supplies to underserved communities.
“We understand that many New Mexican families are unable to buy everything their child needs each school year,” said Janice Torrez, BCBSNM president, “Operation Back to School helps bridge the gap and provides basic items for some of the most vulnerable students across our state.”
