Spirit Airlines cuts Albuquerque flights amid financial woes
Spirit Airlines planes parked at Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport in January 2025. The low-cost airline is no longer flying to and from the Albuquerque International Sunport.
Budget carrier Spirit Airlines has discontinued all flights to and from the Albuquerque International Sunport this month following the company’s second bankruptcy filing in a year.
Spirit stopped flying out of the Sunport effective Oct. 3, according to Sunport spokesperson Leah Black. The company had offered low-cost nonstop flights between Albuquerque and Las Vegas, Nevada, since 2022.
Spirit announced plans to cease operations this month in 12 cities, including Albuquerque; Oakland, San Diego, Sacramento and San Jose, California; Birmingham, Alabama; Boise, Idaho; Chattanooga, Tennessee; Columbia, South Carolina; Macon, Georgia; Portland, Oregon; and Salt Lake City.
Reuters reported at the beginning of October that the low-budget airline was cutting nearly half of its fleet in an attempt to scale back costs as part of its filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. The company in September also said it would cut 1,800 flight attendants before the end of the year.
“We value our partnership with Spirit and appreciate the service they’ve provided to our community,” Black said. “This decision was part of a broader change impacting multiple markets.”
Customers can still fly from Albuquerque to Las Vegas five times a day via Southwest Airlines, the Sunport’s largest carrier by market share, Black said. Spirit made up less than 1% of Sunport flights before its exit.
Representatives for Spirit Airlines did not respond to a request for comment.
