Taos is the best little community in the country to spend a few bucks, according to a cohort of lifestyle writers, editors and directors who named the small Southwestern hamlet Best Small Shopping Town in the U.S. this month.

“Walk the Taos Plaza and you’ll find artisans selling handmade goods — Native-made jewelry, local artwork, and Southwestern-style clothing,” reads Travel + Leisure’s release announcing Taos as the winner on Aug. 15. “In Taos, everything from shopping to dining is an act of connection with the land and people who have called it home for generations.”

The poll is part of the World’s Best Awards, a listicle-style series the New York-based magazine produces annually. Results provide readers with a snapshot of communities that stand out for attractions like food, natural beauty, friendliness and culture. This year marks the World’s Best Awards’ 30th anniversary.

Interviewed by Travel + Leisure, La Luna & La Fonda owner Maria Valdez called Taos “a crossroads of cultures, histories, and landscapes. You feel it the moment you arrive.”

Last month, Travel + Leisure also announced the results of a reader poll that named Santa Fe as the No. 1 city on its U.S. Travel Destinations list.
