Whataburger on Alameda near Tin Can Alley finally opens

If you’ve ever driven by the Whataburger on Alameda and wondered when it’s going to open, wonder no more.
The long-awaited Whataburger at 6100 Alameda NE is up and running after hitting paperwork snags for months. The location, Albuquerque’s ninth Whataburger, opened Monday.
Developers broke ground on the 2,816-square-foot restaurant in early 2024, and it was supposed to open in July of last year, according to Tania Moran, a regional Whataburger spokesperson.
The burger spot sat and appeared ready for business for months. Community members told Moran at Monday’s opening that they always drove by and wondered when it would open.
“Paperwork is one of the main things that delays everything,” Moran said. “It was a little bit more of the behind-the-scenes that wasn’t authorizing us to be able to open properly and safely for the community.”
The corporate-owned franchise, led by operating partner Maria Aiken, will employ 70 people and is currently hiring to fill open positions.
Open 24 hours every day, the restaurant will offer drive-thru and dine-in service, a news release said. Customers can also place orders for curbside pickup and delivery through the Whataburger app and website.
“We’re excited to be part of the energy that comes from being so close to Tin Can Alley and look forward to welcoming guests to our new location,” Aiken said in a statement.
