January was a fairly normal month weatherwise, with temperatures only "three-tenths of a degree away from normal," according to Clay Anderson, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, Albuquerque.

Anderson said precipitation at the Sunport, where the NWS office is located, was only recorded to be .033 inches and snow totals for the month were 2.4 inches.

A storm system moving into the area will bring an end to the warmer weather we've been enjoying as winds and precipitation bring colder temperatures to Albuquerque.

"We're off … to kind of a wet and unsettled start for certain," Anderson said. "Thursday night into Friday … actually extending into Saturday, as well as kind of our impact window where we'll have some winds and definitely some colder temperatures to contend with, and some precipitation."

Anderson said the snow will initially start in the higher elevations, but will be coming down to the valley floor Friday night into Saturday.

The snow won't last long, Anderson said, "we'll have a break thereafter over the weekend and early next week, but then we have another … potentially significant storm system coming toward the middle of next week."

Anderson said the storm pattern doesn't look like it will let up, forecasting a "wet and active" month in February.

Current weather forecast

This winter, New Mexicans can expect more active storm systems bringing more rain and snow across the state as the El Niño brings wetter weather to the region.
