A supermoon is a what astronomers refer to as a "perigean full moon," which is what happens around the time the moon is closest to the earth in orbit, the Almanac's website stated.
This month's supermoon is known as the sturgeon moon, named so for the time of year when the fish was once abundant in the Great Lakes.
