The Volcanoes Trail is a fascinating trek that allows visitors the chance to discover remnants of ancient volcanic activity and witness breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape.

This trail takes you through a volcanic field, created by volcanic eruptions that occurred thousands of years ago. It provides an opportunity to witness the remnants of these eruptions, including volcanic cinder cones, lava flows, and expansive volcanic fields, all of which are now part of the Petroglyph National Monument.

Location and Access

Located on the westside of Albuquerque, The Volcanoes Trail is easily accessible to both locals and tourists alike. The trailhead starts from the parking area near the volcanoes, making it convenient for visitors to begin their adventure. The trail consists of a 3.2 mile loop with an elevation of 374 feet.

There are three distinct trails to choose from:

The trail can be divided into three separate experiences. Each one provides scenic views and historical significance:

  1. JA Volcano and the Albuquerque Overlook: This trail provides a relatively short trip, making it an ideal choice for families and beginners (around one mile, round trip). It has has two shaded rest areas with benches.

  1. Vulcan Volcano Loop: This subsection of the trail can be found by going to the northside of the main parking lot near the gate. The trail along the eastern base of Vulcan is difficult to find but don’t give up. A gradual incline up the east side of Vulcan leads to a level, mini-volcanic valley on Vulcan’s north side. Round trip of two miles.

  1. North Volcanoes Loop Trail: This section of the trail connects to the Vulcan Volcano Loop and will take you to the remnants of a historic corral. The distance is 2.3 miles connected to the Vulcan Volcano Loop and back.

Petroglyphs and Cultural Significance

Besides its geological wonders, the Volcanoes Trail is also home to ancient petroglyphs, which are rock carvings etched into volcanic rocks by Native American tribes centuries ago. These petroglyphs provide a unique cultural and historical aspect to the hike, allowing visitors to connect with the region's indigenous heritage and learn more about local history.
