On the eve of the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, activists of all ages and walks of life joined at Faith Temple Church of God in Christ on Saturday for their own march, advocating for higher wages, affordable housing, an end to police brutality and equal voting rights for all.
Chants such as “Hey hey, ho ho, racism has got to go” and “Raise your voice and make a stand, together we can heal this land” filled the morning air in the South Broadway neighborhood in Albuquerque.
Well-known hymns were sung with alternative lyrics — “Battle Hymn for Voting Rights” set to the tune of “Battle Hymn of the Republic” and “America for the People” sung as “America the Beautiful.”
Participants joined inside the church for songs and speeches from local community leaders afterward.
The March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, in which Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famed “I Have a Dream” speech, took place in Washington, D.C., on Aug. 28, 1963.
Organizers characterized Saturday's gathering as a continuation of 1963's great march, rather than a commemoration.
