Study shows New Mexicans prefer adopting a shelter dog vs. purebreds: 50 adoptable dogs from AWD

Published Modified

New Mexicans prefer the underdog, often choosing to adopt a rescue dog rather than a purebred, which can sometimes run as high as $10,000 for breeds such as the Rottweilers and Chow Chows, according to a news release from Bone Voyage Dog Rescue.

A survey of 3,000 potential dog owners showed a 75% of New Mexicans would rather adopt a shelter dog than a purebred, the release said.

“This increasing trend towards shelter dog adoption promises substantial improvements in the welfare of homeless animals, says Annette Thompson, executive director of Bone Voyage Dog Rescue, in the release. "The shift could lead to a decrease in the number of dogs in shelters, as more are adopted.”

The release added New Mexico ranked third in Google searches for shelter dogs.

The Animal Welfare Department has almost 350 dogs looking for homes.
