It has been a dreary couple of days in the 505 with clouds and highs only reaching the 50s in Albuquerque.

As the moisture in the air increases, the chance of snow also increases in the higher elevations around the city.

The chance of snow is "going to be very elevation dependent," said Brian Guyer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, Albuquerque. "So … the areas that have the greatest chance to see rain or snow are going to be closer to the foothills. And then like some of the higher places on the West Mesa."

Guyer said the snow will come Thursday morning and the lower elevations, areas below 6,000 feet, will be getting rain.

He added the snow will turn to more of a rainstorm mix throughout the afternoon, but the foothills could get a few inches of snow.

Guyer said the East Mountains could see up to 6 to 10 inches.

Don't get too comfortable in the cold, though, Guyer said, "it's going to warm up pretty quickly … Whatever snow there is will melt quickly. The temperatures are warming up above normal again, and it's going to stay that way through most of next week."

Current weather forecast

This winter, New Mexicans can expect more active storm systems bringing more rain and snow across the state as the El Niño brings wetter weather to the region.
