A BOOK ABOUT INTERNATIONAL RIVERS
Basia Irland, founder of the Art and Ecology program at the University of New Mexico, is the author of “What Rivers Know: Listening to the Voices of Global Waterways.” The book presents 25 intimate portraits of rivers from around the world. Among them are the Rio Grande, the Animas/San Juan rivers (Gold King Mine spill), the Seine in France and the Chaobai in China.
Readers learn the rivers’ histories, current environmental health status, and their struggles at solving their relationships with humans and with climate change. And Irland’s book also discusses innovative practices for addressing pollution, recycling wastewater and what steps — if any — are being taken to remedy their ailments.
Lucy R. Lippard, an author/art critic who lives in Galisteo, wrote the book’s foreword.
The publisher is Texas A&M University Press. Irland is professor emerita in the UNM Department of Art and Art History.
