AT BOOKWORKS

Albuquerque author-illustrator Jeff Drew will read from and autograph copies of his new children’s book “Alfie Explores A to Z: A Seek & Find Adventure.” Readers meet Alfie, a friendly bookworm, as he travels through the alphabet in this interactive picture book. Each letter of the alphabet has its own unique destination, with scenes full of creatures, objects and actions that begin with the corresponding letter, a rhymed poem and a guide to help young readers decode each scene.

The event is at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd. NW.

AT TREASURE HOUSE BOOKS & GIFTS

Gerold Yonas will sign copies of book two in his “Project Z” thriller series “The Dragon’s Brain” from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9, at Treasure House Books & Gifts.

The story line: A scientific revolution in green energy might solve the climate crisis, but what happens when the breakthrough sparks a mysterious disease?

Yonas, a physicist and engineer, was the chief scientist for President Ronald Reagan’s Strategic Defense Initiative.

Treasure House is located at 2012 South Plaza St. NW, Old Town.

IN SANTA FE

Don Usner will discuss and sign copies of the 30th anniversary edition of his book “Sabino’s Map: Life in Chimayó’s Old Plaza” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 7, at Collected Works.

The first edition sparked interest in preserving and reinvigorating Chimayó’s Plaza del Cerro. In the 30 years since then, the community and its people have been revitalized with the help of the Chimayó Cultural Preservation Association and the establishment of a museum in Usner’s ancestor’s home in the old plaza.

Usner was born and raised in Chimayó and Los Alamos. He is a cultural historian, a writer and a photographer who lives and works in Santa Fe.

Among other books on New Mexico that Usner has written, taken photographs for and/or contributed to are “Benigna’s Chimayó: Cuentos from the Plaza,” “Valles Caldera: A New Vision for New Mexico’s National Preserve” (with William deBuys), “Chasing Dichos Through Chimayó” and “Orale! Lowrider: Custom Made in New Mexico.”

Collected Works is located at 202 Galisteo St., Santa Fe.

POETRY QUARTERLY

The fall issue of the Albuquerque-based Fixed and Free Quarterly is out.

Billy Brown, the editor and publisher, said the poetry publication is available now, plus shipping, from Amazon and will soon be available directly from him with no shipping cost.

Brown can be reached at 505-401-8139 or by email at fixedandfreequarterly@gmail.com.

There are also 11 readings annually. The next Fixed and Free reading will be Dec. 12 online via Zoom. Nonreaders as well as readers should contact Brown for an invitation to view the Zoom event on Dec. 12.

The number of Open Mic readers varies from 20 to 30 and each is limited to four minutes of reading time, Brown said. Those interested in signing up for an Open Mic slot should contact Brown.

He said he is considering alternating readings — one month Zoom and the next month in person. “My hope is that face-to-face will be back at The Source on Carlisle (Boulevard) SE in Albuquerque,” he said.

Last August marked the 16th year of Fixed and Free readings. “So it’s a long and healthy tradition. Everyone is welcome. There are no age or topic restrictions,” Brown said.
