Books on the Bosque to host two author events
AT BOOKS ON THE BOSQUE
Books on the Bosque is hosting two author events next weekend.
At 3 p.m. Saturday, July 12, Scott Russell Duncan will discuss his book “Old California Strikes Back.” The book is described as a magic memoir and meta-novel in which “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” meets “Yo Soy Joaquin.” The memoir also mixes in historical fiction, surrealism and Xicanx futurism. At its heart, “it is a meditation on identity, colonialization and the fight to preserve a lost history.”
Duncan, who is Chicano, edited the first Chicano sci-fi anthology “El Porvenir, Ya!: Citlalzazanilli Mexicatl.” He also is director of Palabras del Pueblo writing workshop and co-creator of Maíz Poppin’ Press.
At 2 p.m. Sunday, July 13, Reah Bravo will talk about her book “Complicit: Why We Enable Misbehaving Men.” Bravo had worked in broadcast journalism, producing political and other news segments for the PBS program “Charlie Rose.” That stint ended when she joined the nearly half of all sexually harassed women in America who leave their jobs, according to Bravo’s website.
Bravo’s book is described as a thoroughly researched and deeply personal examination of how women unintentionally endure workplace abuse and what they can do to change things for the better. It asks the question: “When many employers mandate training to prevent harassment of all kinds, why is workplace abuse still so rampant?”
A review of “Complicit,” now out in paperback, called it “a brave book that imbues #MeToo-era discourse with a fresh voice.”
Books on the Bosque is located at 6261 Riverside Plaza Lane NW.
