The daily grind has slowed a bit for Dennis Javier Jasso – it’s a good thing.

The member of New Mexico-based Nosotros is glad to get a break from the band’s rigorous touring schedule.

The rest comes in time to perform a New Year’s Eve show in Taos.

“Being in a band, it’s really weird not to perform on New Year’s Eve,” Jasso says. “We’re doing what we love on stage.”

Nosotros will be joined by Robert Mirabal at 7 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, at KTAOS Solar Center for the New Year’s Eve Masquerade Party.

Nosotros has spent the last two decades making music and touring, all while making its mark with its blend of Latin music.

The band has been features on National Public Radio and have been twice been named winners of the John Lennon Songwriting Competition.

Today, the band is 10 members strong. It was founded in 1994 by Randy Sanchez.

Over the years, there’s been numerous line up rotations, yet the band continues to blend Latin, rock, salsa, jazz and cumbia together.

After releasing two albums, the band left their hometown of Las Cruces and relocated to the Albuquerque/Santa Fe area.

They continued to make a name for themselves with a near non-stop performance schedule. They teamed up with producer Chris Trujillo to release their third album, self-titled “Nosotros.” Trujillo is best known for his work with Tom Petty, The Black Crowes, Rod Stewart and Toto. The album received numerous awards from the New Mexico Music Awards, including the highly coveted “Album of the Year” and “Producer of the Year” awards.

In 2014, Nosotros celebrated 20 years as a band.

To mark the milestone, Nosotros released an anthology CD simply titled, “XX.” The bonus song on the album was a previously unreleased song called “Aqui y Alla”, a collaboration with producer Luis Guerra. Once again, the band found themselves on NPR’s Alt Latino when they included “Aqui Y Alla” on their show. The song also won an award for “Best Latin Song” in 2015.

Jasso says the band will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2024.

The group has been in the studio in the spring and summer working on two new songs.

“We were able to get Raul Pacheco from Ozomatli to produce the songs with us,” Jasso says. “They will be out in the spring. We filmed videos for both songs and are editing them now.”

Jasso joined the band when he was 23 and has grown alongside the members of the band.

“We’ve gone from kids to adults,” he says. “I think you can hear the maturity in our music. We’re always finding new ways to be different. You can listen to our early music and it seems like night and day, which is a good thing. We continue to evolve and give our music the Nosotros flair.”
