Cheers to Zozobra: New Mexico Brewers Guild releases commemorative glass

Make a toast to a New Mexico tradition with a Old Man Gloom commemorative pint glass and benefit local breweries.

The New Mexico Brewers Guild held its annual Pint Glass Day on Wednesday with the release of glassware that pays homage to the annual burning of Zozobra. The cultural event celebrates 100 years this year.

NMBG worked with the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe on the limited edition keepsake. A portion of the proceeds from the pint glass sales will benefit the club and $1 of each glass sold will benefit the NMBG and its efforts to support, promote, and preserve local breweries through education and awareness.

Corrales artist Syd Linkletter was selected to come up with the design for this year’s pint glass. The glass features Zozobra’s face with his body engulfed in flames. He is accompanied by figures that are traditionally connected to the burning of Zozobra event. The pint glass includes Zozobra’s “gloomies” that resemble little ghosts along with the 100-year branding.

The NMBG held its first artist competition and Linkletter was chosen to create the pint glass art. Linkletter is a seasoned artist. They have worked for national and international clients in the art industry, produced children’s books and comic books, and has been involved in the film industry, according to their website.

Linkletter has been an art and design recluse since infancy, according to their website. They bring digital art prints in pop art and cartooning styles. More information on Linkletter can be found at @sydlinkletter on Instagram.

The limited-edition glassware costs $7 a piece and will be sold at participating breweries throughout New Mexico. Purchasers can take a photo with their new pint glass and tag the NMBG on Instagram or Facebook with #NMBGPintGlassDay2024 for a chance to be featured on its social media pages, according to the NMBG Facebook page.
