Curating community: Bobby Beals brings together 5 jewelers for Summer Trunk Show
Take one look at Bobby Beals and you’ll see lots of jewelry.
“It’s something I’ve done all my life,” Beals says of his jewelry wearing. “My grandpa used to wear a lot of it and that’s where I get my inspiration.”
Beals’ grandfather also purchased plenty of his jewelry from trunk shows – a fact that Beals now finds captivating.
This is the impetus behind Beals’ Summer Trunk Show, which will be held at Bishop’s Lodge from noon-5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 4, and Saturday, Aug. 5.
“When I was younger, I remember seeing these actual trunk shows where jewelers would open their trunk and sell jewelry from there,” he says. “This is the same premise.”
Beals curated the show to feature five artists – Pia, Matt Campos, Sanjay, JC Ortiz and Ashly Sandoval.
“Each artist is quite different from one another,” Beals says. “Each of them is bringing their newest jewelry, and they will be selling it right at the gallery.”
Beals says Campos is a regular artist shown at the gallery inside Bishop’s Lodge. The other four are new to working with Beals.
He chose the artists to ensure that there would be no overlapping in styles.
“JC works with metal that has a rawness to it,” he says. “Pia’s work is elegant, soft and very classy. Ashly has this traditional turquoise style from the Southwest with a contemporary spin. Sanjay has an East Indian style with ayurvedic meaning throughout.”
