Daniela Ramirez to talk about new children's book, 'Welcome Home, Esmerelda' at Books on the Bosque
AT BOOKS ON THE BOSQUE
Daniela Ramirez of Rio Rancho will chat with Kim Tomsic about Ramirez’s new children’s book “Welcome Home, Esmerelda” at 3 p.m. Saturday, May 17, at Books on the Bosque. The book tells the story of a little girl named Esmerelda, who has lived in many countries thanks to her Papa’s job in the military.
Now her Papa is relocating again, this time to San Antonio, Texas.
Esmerelda is uneasy about the move because she’s never lived in the United States. She doesn’t know what to expect. Though members of her extended family live there, she’s never met them.
Before she leaves, Esmerelda talks on the phone with her abuela (grandma), who offers welcoming advice: “Remember home is not always a place. Home is a feeling in your heart.” Esmerelda’s older sister Mariana also tries to sooth her sister’s apprehension.
The story of Esmerelda was inspired by Ramirez’s own experiences as a military kid, moving around every few years. She is now a military spouse.
Maribel Lechuga created the delightful illustrations that enhance the story.
The book’s target audience is ages 6 to 9. It is also available in Spanish as “Bienvenida a casa, Esmerelda.”
Books on the Bosque is located at 6261 Riverside Plaza Lane NW.
AT THE KIMO THEATRE
Author Joe Abercrombie will be in conversation at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 15, with George R.R. Martin about Abercrombie’s new fantasy novel “The Devils.” Plague and famine stalk Europe in this new novel. Monsters lurk in every shadow. Greedy princes care only for their own ambition. Only the darkest path leads to light. But it’s a path the righteous dare not tread.
Abercrombie, who resides in England, is the author of the bestselling trilogies “The First Law” and “The Age of Madness.”
Presenting the “A Word with Writers” event are Bookworks, the Albuquerque Public Library and AMP Concerts. Two types of tickets are available at bkwrks.com and at the KiMo Theatre, cabq.gov/artsculture. A single general admission ticket and a hard copy of “The Devils” is $35.
