The local music scene is as strong as ever.

Just ask Barney Lopez.

Lopez helps put together the annual “Night of the Living Cover Bands” series, which sees local bands dress up and perform as another performer.

The series is in its 16th year and takes place Friday-Sunday through Oct. 29, at Launchpad.

“(Launchpad owner) Joe Anderson came up with the name,” Lopez says. “The event has grown from the first year.”

This year’s series will see more than 130 local bands performing 20-minute sets each night at Launchpad.

“This year, we added Sunday to the mix, and it allowed us to make some of the shows all ages,” Lopez says. “Because there are all ages shows, we tried to book some younger bands to get to perform inside the Launchpad. We’re trying to make this accessible to a younger community.”

On Friday, Oct. 13, six bands will take the stage, Lopez says.

The lineup includes: No Manners as Against Me!, Miserable Things as INXS, Dust City Opera as Muse, Ashes of Jupiter as Stone Temple Pilots, Spacejunk as Black Sabbath and Amped Owl Drive as Elvis Presley.

More than 130 local bands will take part in “Night of the Living Cover Bands” which takes place at Launchpad in Downtown Albuquerque through Oct. 29.

On Saturday, Oct. 14, the lineup includes: The Illegal Aliens as KISS, Music is the Enemy as Every Time I Die, Ballistic Batz as Marilyn Manson, Omi.O as The Growlers, Metamorfos as Steely AccordiDan and Future Scars as Garbage.

On Sunday, Oct. 15, the lineup includes Savings as Rage Against the Machine, Thursday Marks Fall as Primus, Blot Xenia as Red Hot Chili Peppers (’80’s era), The Writing Remains as Slipknot and Frail Limbs/Dot Wall as Postal Service.

“This gives bands a chance to do something different from what they are usually playing,” Lopez says. “One of the cool nights will see Metamorfos as Steely AccordiDan. They have Casey Mraz who plays accordion, so the band will do Steely Dan songs with an accordion.”

Lopez is looking forward to local band Soy Guero when they take the stage during the series as Britney Spears.

“They’ve covered N.W.A. and Prince in the past and have been amazing,” he says. “This is a chance to showcase the local music scene in a fun way.”
