Essential apps: iOverlander
Any discussion of essential apps for adventures outside start with iOverlander Legacy. No vanlifer, camper or tourist should buckle up without first downloading this app.
Why it is essential:
It works when you have service, but also works when out of cellphone coverage or Wi-Fi, if you have accessed the areas while in coverage.
IOverlander’s maps work with GPS and once you’ve downloaded the information for the area, GPS continues to guide you to your destination even when out-of-service.
Use it with care, as its information is user-generated and sometimes leads you astray or has outdated information. Once in Alaska, my team followed it to the end of a dirt road and to a man sitting in front of his shack with a loaded gun and barking dogs.
But when it is good, it helps you find:
Free and paid camping spots.
Places to get water.
Propane filling stations.
This is the legacy app. It is no longer maintained and is expected to be retired in early 2025. A new version, with paid options, iOverlander 2 is now available.
