Essential Overland Gear: A few tools

Bag full of tools

Hammer, Phillips screwdriver, flathead. These are a few of my favorite things.

Instead of searching for my tool roll under a pile of gear or in a closet when just one or two tools will do, I grab for these essentials tools when I just need to tighten a bolt or hammer in a tent stake.

I store a hammer and a couple of screwdrivers including a flathead and a Philips in the passenger door pocket where maps often go to shrivel and die. I don't use one with one stem and bits as I almost always can't find the right attachment when I need it. Usually these are extra tools, long-forgotten and forlorn in the kitchen extras drawer.

Otherwise you can grab bargain bin tools near checkout at Lowe's or Harbor Freight for less than $10.

Interesting fact to amaze your friends: Phillips screwdrivers are named for the man who bought the patent not its inventor.
