Essential Overland Gear: Carabiners
Clip in. Rock on.
Rock climbers use carabiners to stay safe. Adventurers use them to attach essential gear to their packs and rigs.
From water bottles to rain gear to satellite communicators: If you can clip it, a carabiner will keep it attached and easy to reach.
Though I often source them from my rock climbing friends or family, you don’t need expensive mountain-climbing quality gear like the Black Diamond HotForge screwgate carabiner ($14.95 each) if you’re just using it to tote your gear. But, if you buy the three for $1.25 ones at the Dollar Tree, expect the clip to break within weeks.
Home Plus carabiners at your local Ace Hardware will do the trick for less than $1 each. Though these do carry the product information saying: “Not for climbing. D-ring carabiner clips are suitable for outdoor hiking, fishing, camping, traveling.”
