Festive notes: Albuquerque Concert Band to play free holiday concert at KiMo Theatre
The Albuquerque Concert Band with carolers.
If you’re ready for some holiday cheer, the Albuquerque Concert Band is giving a free concert on Sunday, Dec. 3, at the KiMo Theatre.
The band enjoys dressing up in decorative garb and conductor John Sanks will bring his vast assortment of holiday hats to change throughout the show.
The festive music menu will include, “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year,” “Jazzy Christmas,” “A New Orleans Nutcracker Suite,” “Hanukkah Festival,” “Sleigh Ride” and more. The musicians will also perform a sing-along piece with the audience.
The Albuquerque Concert Band has been bringing music to the Albuquerque metro area for almost 60 years. From its humble beginnings in 1967 as the 20-member Albuquerque Municipal Band, to its current incarnation as the Albuquerque Concert Band with more than 80 members, this New Mexico community band continues to serve up free music to Albuquerque’s citizens.
The musicians are an all-volunteer ensemble of adult players that rehearse and perform throughout the year. Members of the band come from all walks of life; health care workers, lawyers, homemakers, music teachers, blue collar workers and more. The band performs from 15 to 17 concerts a year. Rehearsals are once a week on Monday evenings.
Performances during the fall/winter concert series are held at the Eldorado High School Performing Arts Center, once a month, from October to April. Summer concerts take place twice a month at the Albuquerque Balloon Museum and the New Mexico Veterans Memorial Park from June to August.
