New Mexico celebrates 112 years of statehood this weekend. Someone must have had an epiphany when deciding to admit the state on Jan. 6. Feliz cumpleaños, mi encantandora.

1Historic opportunity

The Historic Fairview Cemetery is hosting a “Statehood History Hike and Volunteer Thank You” event at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6. The public can learn more about the notable people buried at the cemetery who played a role in New Mexico becoming a state in 1912. The cemetery is located at 700 Yale Blvd. SE. 2Winging it

The Candelaria Nature Preserve is inviting you to Wing in the New Year from 2-4 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, and 8-10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6. Tour the preserve while learning the basics of birding. The event is free. The preserve is located at 2901 Candelaria Road NW.

3Ice, ice baby

The New Mexico Ice Wolves are taking to the ice to face-off against the El Paso Rhinos this weekend. The puck drops at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Jan. 5, and Saturday, Jan. 6, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7. Tickets are $15-$27.50, plus fees, at holdmyticket.com. The Outpost Ice Arenas is located at 9530 Tramway Blvd. NE.

4Laughs and lagers

Tumbleroot Brewery and Distillery is hosting “Santa Fe’s Stand-Up Comedy Contest” from 6-7:30 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7. Watch 10 comedians deliver five minutes of their best material and you get to vote for the winner. The event is free with reservations at eventbrite.com. Donations will go towards the prize money and performers. Tumbleroot is located at 2791 Agua Fria Street in Santa Fe.

5Back to Babylon

The Lensic Presents and Santa Fe Opera is bringing The Met: Live in HD to the screen with its production of “Nabucco” at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6. Tickets run $22-$28, plus fees, at lensic.org. The Lensic is located at 211 W. San Francisco St. in Santa Fe.
