Heading to Santa Fe for Traditional Spanish Market and Contemporary Hispanic Market? Here's what you need to know
It’s market season in Santa Fe.
Beginning Saturday, July 29 and Sunday, July 30, two markets will showcase some of New Mexico’s best artists around downtown Santa Fe.
The Traditional Spanish Market and the Contemporary Hispanic Market run concurrently each year – with Traditional Spanish Market artists located around the Plaza and the Palace of the Governors. Contemporary Hispanic Market artists are lined up and down Lincoln Avenue, just north of the Plaza and underneath white tented booths.
The Traditional Spanish Market is in its 71st year, while the Contemporary Hispanic Market is in its 37th year.
The Traditional Spanish Market celebrates age-old techniques and materials, the Contemporary Hispanic Market celebrates the evolution of its artforms
This year marks the first time that the Atrisco Heritage Foundation is at the helm of the Traditional Spanish Market.
In March, the Atrisco Heritage Foundation was named as the new operational stewards of the market.
Atrisco Heritage Foundation and the Spanish Colonial Arts Society came to an agreement for the Albuquerque-based company to take the helm of putting on the market on the Plaza in Santa Fe.
"We are proud to preserve a community and cultural event with a long-standing history in Santa Fe, and we are excited for the future of the (Traditional) Spanish Market," said Peter Sanchez, Atrisco Heritage Foundation CEO. "We are grateful for (Spanish Colonial Arts Society's) many years facilitating the market."
Both markets will run from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, July 29, and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday, July 30, in downtown Santa Fe around the Plaza.
Traditional Spanish Market will have more than 100 booths of juried artists.
Inside the Plaza near the band stand there will be 25 youth artists also selling their works. The youth artists are mentored by another juried artist.
While attending the Traditional Spanish Market along the Plaza, on Lincoln Avenue, there is the Contemporary Hispanic Market, which features more than 100 artists.
The two markets run concurrently and feature contemporary art by Hispanics.
It is one of the largest contemporary Hispanic markets in the country and is now in its 37th year.
Both events are free and open to the public.
Parking can be tricky around Santa Fe as car access to the Plaza is restricted for the events. There are public parking lots around Downtown Santa Fe, as well as parking in the Capitol lot near Paseo de Peralta and Old Santa Fe Trail.
Luckily, public parking is close and within walking distance to the Plaza for both markets.
