Helping a cause: Albuquerque-based musicians come together for Burque Niños Block Party
Albuquerque-based band Red Light Cameras will perform at the 5th annual Burque Niños Block Party on Saturday, Aug. 5.
Five years.
That’s how long Barney Lopez has helped put together the annual Burque Niños Block Party to help support the community.
This year’s event will be held from 3-10 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Fusion Meadows, 708 First St. NW.
As with previous years, Lopez says the event will benefit Cuidando Los Niños.
The mission of Cuidando Los Niños is to break the cycle of homelessness for children and families. The organization provides high-quality early childhood education, therapeutic services, supportive housing and parent education.
As of last year, Lopez says the events have been successful in raising money for the organization. He says during the year it went virtual, they were able to raise $10,000. Every other year it has been about half at $5,000.
“Albuquerque is a community that can come together to raise money,” he says. “We’ve been very fortunate to keep the momentum going and building this event into something bigger each year.”
Doors for the event open at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5.
This year’s lineup will include the Red Light Cameras, The Mango Cakes, Def-i, Thursday Marks Fall, Side Montero, Willajay and Vibestrong.
The first year was a block party and the second year, it was virtual because of the pandemic. In 2021, it was held at the Sunshine Theater as an ugly Christmas sweater party.
In 2022, the event was a black light party.
“Each year we sit down as a group and see how we can make the event different,” he says.
