Poetry event deadline is March 6

POETRY EVENT DEADLINE IS MARCH 6

The deadline to sign up to attend the launch of "Open-Hearted Horizon: An Albuquerque Poetry Anthology," is Wednesday, March 6.

The event will be held 1-3 p.m. Sunday, March 10, at the Albuquerque Museum. Many of the poets in the volume will read from their work.

AT BOOKWORKS IN ALBUQUERQUE

Jean-Luc E. Cartron and Jennifer K. Frey, the co-editors of the encyclopedic “Wild Carnivores of New Mexico” will discuss the book at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at Bookworks.

New Mexico is — or until recently has been — home to 28 native, wild-ranging mammal species in the order of carnivore. Those mammals include the cougar, jaguar, bobcat, coyote, gray wolf, black bear, raccoon, kit fox, black-footed ferret, ringtail and white-nosed coati. The book’s back cover states that it is the first-ever landmark study of the state’s wild carnivores.

Cartron and Frey assembled leading southwestern biologists to consider the animals and the major issues that shape their present in New Mexico and the region. The book contains discussions of habitat, evolving or altered ecosystems, and recent discoveries about animal behavior and range.

By the by, the book addresses free-range and feral dog management and feral cat management.

The collaborative event, called “Writing the Wild,” is presented by the Leopold Writing Program and Bookworks.

Cartron is a research biology professor at the University of New Mexico and is the author of “Raptors of New Mexico.” Frey is a professor of mammalian ecology in the Fish, Wildlife and Conservation Ecology department at New Mexico State University.

Charlene Bell Dietz reads and signs the second edition of her historical novel “The Spinster, The Rebel and The Governor” from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Sunday, March 3.

Cindy Sloan Butts will sign copies of “The Roadrunners and The Runaways of Roswell,” the second volume in her Derek Taylor mystery series, from 1:30-3:30 p.m. Saturday, March 9.

AT COLLECTED WORKS IN SANTA FE

Deborah Jackson Taffa will chat about her memoir “Whiskey Tender” at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 6, at Collected Works.

Bestselling author Tommy Orange, whose novel “There There” won the 2019 American Book Award, said “We have more Native stories now, but we have not heard one like this. ‘Whiskey Tender’ is unexpected and propulsive, indeed tender, but also bold and beautifully told, like a drink you didn’t know you were thirsty for.”

Taffa is a playwright and the director of the MFA Creative Writing Program at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe.

Taffa is a citizen of the Quechan (Yuma) Nation and Laguna Pueblo.
