Rebecca Nagle to read from 'By the Fire We Carry' at Bookworks

Rebecca Nagle will read from and sign copies of her new book “By the Fire We Carry: The Generations-Long Fight for Justice on Native Land” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, at Bookworks.
Nagle, an activist and a citizen of the Cherokee Nation, says the book covers the personal, the historical, the political and the familial all wrapped up in one.
“I wanted to write the book because I believe the American public needs to understand that the legacy of colonization is not just a problem for Indigenous people but a problem for our democracy,” she said in a post on social media.
Kirkus gave the book a starred review, noting that the book describes “the history of the Five Tribes before and after the Trail of Tears, the evolution of United States policy toward Native Americans and the unique peculiarities of Indian law.”

The bookstore-gift shop will host Zelda Leah Gatuskin in a “Meet the Publisher” event from 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19. Gatuskin is editor-in-chief of Albuquerque’s Amador Publishers. She’ll give special recognition to the works by four late authors that Amador has published. They are Harry Willson, Donald Gutierrez, Eva Krutein and Gilbert John.
From 1:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 20, Nasario García will sign his new book, “Beyond My Adobe Schoolhouse: My Life in Education.”

AT BOOKS ON THE BOSQUE
Three New Mexico poets — Catherine Barnett, Jenny George and Anne Haven McDonnell — will read from their recent work at noon Sunday, Oct. 13.
At 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, Phillip Fracassi and Jonathan Edward Durham read their stories in an event called “Horror Palooza.” Fracassi is a writer of horror, thrillers and science fiction. Durham, author of “Winterset Hollow,” which is described as “a uniquely original story filled properly with unexpected twists and turns … and delivers indelible characters and pulse-pounding action.”

AUTHOR IN ALBUQUERQUE AND SANTA FE
Mirabai Starr will discuss her book “Ordinary Mysticism: Your Life as Sacred Ground” at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, at Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd. NW in Albuquerque; and at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 19, at The Ark Bookstore, 133 Romero St., Santa Fe.
At Bookworks, Starr will be in conversation with Richard Rohr, a Franciscan friar and ecumenical teacher. At both venues, Starr will read from her new book. Starr, a self-identified spiritual guide, helps readers discover their own inner mystic by encouraging them to release their limiting belief that spiritual life exists only in traditional places such as in church or in an ashram in the Himalayas. Rather, she says, people can find sanctity in such simple places as backyard gardens or on slow walks with friends.
AT COLLECTED WORKS
Robyn Hunt launches her new book “The Fiction of Stillness” at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13. The book is called a poetic dialogue with cancer. At the same event, Dr. Melina Martinez will read from her work that is in the Jimmy Santiago Baca Workshop Anthology “Write Until You Cry.” Martinez’s work reflects her journey with cancer.
