Red or green? Las Cruces to host its Chile Drop for the 10th year, community get to vote on the color
The Las Cruces Chile Drop will take place on Dec. 31.
Whether it’s red or green – New Mexico love its chile.
For the 10th year, the Las Cruces Chile Drop will take place on New Year’s Eve to ring in the new year.
At midnight, a 19-foot chrome chile – featuring 400 feet of LED lighting – drops from a crane to commemorate the new year. Whereas before, it was a surprise which color the chile would be, red or green, as of 2021 attendees get to vote on the official state question by scanning a QR code, thus making the surprise even more personal.
According to organizers from Downtown Las Cruces, Chile Drop is a free family event that has become a hallmark of the community’s New Year’s Eve celebrations.
The festivities begin at 8 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 31, at Plaza de Las Cruces, 101 N. Main St., and last until the chile drops at midnight.
This year’s event will feature a lively midway, the soulful sounds of the Memphis Band, the presence of local TV and radio personalities, and a DJ to keep the festivities alive.
Chile Drop was recently voted number three on the list of USA Today’s Best New Year’s Eve Drops, a testament to its growing reputation as a must-attend celebration. What will set this year apart is the exciting news that CNN will be on-site, broadcasting live cut-ins during their New Year’s Eve coverage.
“Please continue to frequently shop, dine, experience, and visit our Downtown and Mesquite districts,” said John Muñoz, president of the Downtown Las Cruces Partnership. “And most especially, join us on this very unique New Year’s Eve celebration where we get to showcase our community to the nation.”
