Retro rock bands, The McCharmlys and SadGirl, to coheadline Launchpad
There’s something in the air at Launchpad.
The McCharmlys and SadGirl will be coheadlining on Friday, July 25.
Angie Monroy, lead singer of The McCharmlys, says the atmosphere at shows is exciting for all.
“It usually is very exciting. There’s just something in the air. I always feel very nervous but excited,” Monroy said. “People are stoked and that I kind of ride off of that. It’s like, I’m so excited that you’re excited, so we’re all just gonna have fun.”
The bands have similar music with key differences, according to Monroy.
“I will say that maybe SadGirl and we, we fall in that like, retro rock vein,” Monroy said. “I think SadGirl’s a little more surfy than we are. They’re more like lo-fi surf, and we’re more like retro rock.”
The two bands are touring 13 cities and Albuquerque is the second stop.
“I have been a big fan of SadGirl for a long time, since I first started to explore my local music scene. So being able to co-headline with them on a tour like this is pretty exciting,” Monroy said. “It’s not very long, but it’s definitely hitting some places that we’ve never been before that we’re excited to explore.”
Monroy has been to New Mexico before, but this will be her and the band’s first time performing here. She says that she loves that everything is “symbolic and special” in the state.
“New Mexico, I feel like, is so rich with history,” Monroy said. “New Mexico feels like a little hidden gem.”
She is excited about the tour and wishes they could tour longer. Monroy says her favorite part of touring is meeting the fans, as well as spending time with her bandmates.
“I love meeting everybody, but I also thoroughly enjoy spending my time with my bandmates. I think my bandmates are really cool people,” Monroy said. “It’s always a good experience. We definitely learn a lot together.”
Monroy says fans come to shows for the music and social media has helped the band form a bond with them.
“The fans feel like they know us, like we’re friends, which I think is really cool,” Monroy said. “And I want to continue to build off of that friendship.”
The McCharmlys plan to debut new music on the tour.
“We’ve been working on a lot of songs, and sometimes we don’t know what the crowd’s gonna like,” Monroy said. “But we wrote it and we’re gonna give it a go, because this is the best time to kind of see how people react to the things that you’re working on.”
