Ronda L. Brulotte to discuss 'Mezcal in Oaxaca: A Craft Spirit for the Global Marketplace' at Bookworks
AT BOOKWORKS
Ronda L. Brulotte will discuss and sign copies of her new book “Mezcal in Oaxaca: A Craft Spirit for the Global Marketplace” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 3. The book traces mezcal’s swift rise to public acceptance and its effects on communities that have distilled it and enjoyed the beverage for generations.
Once considered a drink for peasants — the low-brow cousin of tequila — it is now prized by connoisseurs worldwide. And it is praised as the economic savior of the Mexican state of Oaxaca by powering a craft industry and upholding rural communities and Indigenous traditions.
Brulotte is a professor and chair of the University of New Mexico’s Department of Geography and Environmental Studies and a faculty affiliate with UNM’s Anthropology Department and Latin American Studies.
Bookworks is located at 4022 Rio Grande Blvd. NW.
