I was under the misconception that roses are hard to grow in New Mexico. But my three backyard rose bushes prove I’m as close to a green thumb as I’ll ever be. You can visit the “A Rainbow of Roses” show this weekend. Or plant yourself at one of these other events.

Pop icons
Quintessence: A Community of Singers is performing “Pop Tarts!,” its final concert of the 2024-25 season, at 3 p.m. Sunday, May 18. The group will delve into an array of Top 40 hits by Elton John, The Police, Chappell Roan and more. Tickets are $12-$25, plus fees, at quintessence-abq.com. Wheel fun
The 39th Santa Fe Century gets rolling on Saturday, May 17, and Sunday, May 18, with a series of rides. On Saturday, riders can participate in the Gravelón and Gravelito rides, and Sunday features the Gran Fondo and Century, and Medio Fondo and Half Century. The New Mexico Council of Car Clubs is “Celebrating Lowriders” at the Albuquerque Museum from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Sunday, May 18. The event is free to the public and will feature antique and classic cars, trucks, lowriders and more. The Albuquerque Museum is located at 2000 Mountain Road NW.
‘Hatchet’ and history
Fort Selden Historic Site is hosting a discussion and demonstration of outdoor survival techniques inspired by Gary Paulsen’s “Hatchet” from 10-11 a.m. Saturday, May 17. Passages from the book will be read, and a ranger will discuss the challenges soldiers at the fort faced. Admission is $5 at nmhistoricsites.org/fort-selden, and free for qualifying individuals. The historic site is located at 1280 Fort Selden Road, Radium Springs.
Celebrating heritage
Casa San Ysidro and the Corrales Historical Society are hosting Heritage Day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, May 17. The event will feature horno bread and pies, Acoma Enchanted Dancers, music from Lara Manzanares, an artist's market and more. Casa San Ysidro is located at 973 Old Church Road, Corrales.
Swim on in
Eisenhower Pool is hosting National Water Safety Day from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, May 18. Expect swimming, water safety presentations, activities for kids and more. From noon to 12:30 p.m. there will be a free Parent Tot group swim lesson. Eisenhower Pool is located at 11001 Camero Ave. NE.

The Albuquerque Garden Center is hosting “A Rainbow of Roses” from the Albuquerque Rose Society. The event runs from 1-4 p.m. Saturday, May 17. The garden center is located at 10120 Lomas Blvd. NE.
