Santa Fe Indian Market to host inaugural Native Fashion Week in 2024

Next year’s Santa Fe Indian Market will launch its first-ever Native Fashion Week.

Slated for May 2 through May 5, 2024, the event will include a fashion symposium, workshops and a celebration at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center.

Fashion has been a staple of Indian Market each August for the past 10 years. The nearly week-long version will be sponsored by the city of Santa Fe and feature more than 20 designers, said Executive Director Jamie Schulze (Northern Cheyenne/Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate).

Establishing Native Fashion Week fulfills a dream for curator and art historian Amber-Dawn Bear Robe (Siksika Nation).

“SWAIA’s Indigenous Fashion Show began in 2014 with no budget, a U-Haul to transport models to the outside runway location and a DJ with a microphone. To have the support of both SWAIA and the city of Santa Fe is immense. We plan to create the fashion hub for and to represent the diversity of Indigenous designers from the United States and Canada on a national platform,” said Bear Robe.

The four-day event will include panel discussions and soirée and runway days showcasing the talent of Indigenous designers across North America. These designers will merge the boundaries between art, design and fashion.

Schulze hopes to expand the event to a full week in 2025. The long-term goals include transforming Santa Fe into a global destination for Indigenous fashion.
