Southwest Pickers present 'Bluegrass at the KiMo'
Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass will headline “Bluegrass at the KiMo” on Saturday, July 29.
It’s going to be a night of bluegrass.
The Southwest Pickers is putting on “Bluegrass at the KiMo,” on Saturday, July 29.
Set to perform is Higher Ground Bluegrass, and Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass.
According to Phil Capshaw, Southwest Pickers president, the organization traces its roots back to bluegrass festivals held in Santa Fe back in the 1970s.
“We are a 501c nonprofit group trying to continue the tradition and educate, promote and advocate for traditional and bluegrass music in the state,” Capshaw says in a statement.
It’s taken months of planning to get the show in order.
Capshaw says Higher Ground Bluegrass will take the stage at 6 p.m.
Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass will perform from 7-9 p.m.
Danny Paisley and the Southern Grass is known for its powerful, unadorned and intense traditional bluegrass.
Since Danny Paisley’s father, Bob Paisley (founder of Southern Grass), passed away in 2004, the band has made their niche in the bluegrass world, producing consecutive chart-topping albums.
The group has been given over 15 Bluegrass Music Award nominations and won the 2009 International Bluegrass Music Association Song of the Year for “Don’t Throw Mama’s Flowers Away.”
In 2021, Danny Paisley joined an elite group of vocalists to be awarded the IBMA Male Vocalist of the Year for the third time — an achievement bestowed only to five others in bluegrass music history.
New Mexico-based Higher Ground Bluegrass was founded by “Duke” Weddington in 1998.
The band is celebrating its 25th year as a musical ensemble.
Band members include Dave Devlin, Pat Mahoney, Laura Leach-Devlin and Ben Monroe. The band performs original material penned by members of the group, yet also plays a variety of traditional and contemporary selections influenced by the American traditions of folk, bluegrass, Celtic, country, and rock ’n’ roll.
The band has also recorded nine independent albums, with its latest being “Blue & Gray,” which also marks the 25th anniversary.
