AUTHOR AT TWO ALBUQUERQUE BOOKSTORES

Susan Metallo will autograph copies of her debut young adult novel “Reasons to Hate Me” from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7, at Page 1 Books.

At 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, she will discuss and sign copies of the novel at Books on the Bosque.

The book is billed as a hilarious and heartfelt novel about a theater nerd, addressing such issues as what it means to be a friend and the power of forgiving others and oneself.

The novel was selected by the American Booksellers Association for Indies Introduce Kids and won a work-in-progress award from the Society of Children’s Book Writers and Illustrators.

Metallo lives in Albuquerque.

AUTHOR WITH EVENTS IN ALBUQUERQUE and SANTA FE

Alec Nevala-Lee will talk about his new book “Collisions: A Physicist’s Journey from Hiroshima to the Death of the Dinosaurs” at 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 8, at Bookworks, 4022 Rio Grande Blvd. and at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11, Nevala-Lee will be in conversation with Caroline Fraser at Collected Works, 202 Galisteo in Santa Fe.

The book is a biography of Nobel Prize-winning physicist Luis Alvarez.

To his admirers, Alvarez was the most accomplished, inventive and versatile experimental physicist of his generation.

During World War II he achieved major breakthroughs in radar, played a key role in the Manhattan Project and served as the main scientific observer at the bombing of Hiroshima.

Karen Chase will discuss “Two Tales: Jamali Kamali and ZundelState” at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 7.

The stories, which are about outsiders, explore love and beauty in the context of fear and threats.

The book has had a large following in India. It is now being published in North America for the first time.

Joan Brooks Baker will discuss her story collection “In the Swampyland” at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9.

Among the characters are cockroaches, venomous snakes and biting frogs.

Collected Works is located at 202 Galisteo St in Santa Fe.

Bookworks hosts two author events this week.

Ruby Martinez will discuss her debut young adult novel, “An Embroidery of Souls,” with Emily Jones at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9.

At 6 p.m Saturday, Sept. 13, Maddie Martinez will be in conversation with Sarena Ulibarri about Martinez’s debut novel “The Maiden and Her Monster.” Martinez, born and raised in Albuquerque, lives in New York City.

AT SOMOS

Poets Joanna Fay Brown and Veronica Golos read from their work at 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, at SOMOS Salon, 108 Civic Plaza Drive in Taos.

Brown’s honors include winner of Pinesong’s Mary Ruffin Poole American Heritage Award. Golos’ collection “Vocabulary of Silence”was the winner of a 2011 New Mexico Book Award.
